Review of the Rip Curl Detroit Stainless Men’s Watch

Rip Curl Detroit
Haven’t done a review in quite some time, and for that I apologize.

But I’ve got one for you guys today. And it’s a lovely little watch.

The Rip Curl Detroit is a very dapper watch at first glance. This particular model is the Rip Curl Detroit in Stainless Steel. The Rip Curl Detroit Stainless Men’s Watch is a top of the line sport’s watch, and looks absolutely amazing as a dress watch. It is sure to impress with it’s sleek design, and the stainless steel case complements the black of the dial perfectly. Now, I usually prefer an all black watch and I rarely like the look of stainless watches, but in this particular case I think Rip Curl hit the nail right on the head. I actually prefer the looks of the stainless steel model to the looks of the black version of this watch.

Rip Curl is famous for their brand of watches that is geared primarily towards surfers and outdoors enthusiasts. But their other watches don’t typically capture the hearts and minds of other demographics.  That is not to say that these watches aren’t quality, that they don’t look good, or anything like that. Quite the opposite. I happen to be a pretty rabid Rip Curl fan, But the watches that are outside of their surf line (i.e the Tidemaster) just don’t typically find a wide enough audience. Most people who hear of Rip Curl are attracted to the brand because of the whole water sports, surfer dude persona. They might happen across other products because of this and then buy them. And I think that Rip Curl knows this, and is trying desperately to change it. Not that they resent the surfing aspect of their brand or that they are ungrateful for their largest customer base, but I just think they are thinking bigger and trying to expand their horizons by introducing different types of people to their brand and by making their brand desirable to a wider demographic.

Hence the many newer watches like the Axis, Driver, and Detroit line that Rip Curl has recently unveiled. I think the Detroit Stainless is a perfect example of my point earlier regarding Rip Curl and their efforts of widening their customer base. These new watches stray away from the bright and loud color schemes of their surf watches, and stick to either black or metal tones, and use metal in their watches rather than plastic. They typically have a link style band as well rather than leather or plastic ones. I like this change, and I think it is working for Rip Curl. The Detroit Stainless is a great example of the transition to more casual and even dress watches.

The Rip Curl Detroit in Stainless features a 316L Stainless Steel Case and bracelet which is very solid. 316L is the absolute best steel for water resistance, and is the standard for rip curl. I don’t normally care for link style steel bracelets as I think they are uncomfortable, but this one isn’t too bad. I haven’t swapped it for a leather or plastic one because it would take every ounce of appeal and style out of this watch. The black dial is accented perfectly by the stainless steel case, which is a 50mm but is surprisingly not too big and clunky on my wrist even though that is a large case size. It also features a jeweled movement which is reliable. The watch comes in many different styles, but the Detroit Steel edition only comes with two other colorations as far as the dial goes; those being a blue or brushed steel variety if black isn’t your thing. It is of course water resistant up to 100 meters or 330 feet, and is a great watch retailing for around 250 bucks, although you can find it for less online.

Overall, I would give this watch a solid 4 out of 5. I deduct points for the random movement on this watch. I cannot figure out where it came from or ho made it. When a company omits details like this on a product I can only assume that it is something that they aren’t proud of, otherwise they would be using it as a selling point. It’s really not at all bad, I just think they should at least tell you what it is or who made it, and make that information readily available.

Rip Curl Pipeline Review

January 21, 2013 Leave a comment

Welcome to the GreatTiming Watches blog! Recently we had the opportunity to review the Rip Curl Pipeline. Read on to learn all about it!

Appearance: Normally silver and black watches tend to look plain or cheaply made, but this watch looks exceptional. This is because most watches that use the black and silver color scheme are trying to imitate the look of real sterling silver simply by using metallic paint. Because Rip Curl decided to use a flat, matte silver finish rather than metallic silver paint, it avoids that cheap watch look, and instead looks much more natural while still looking sleek. The watch has a black silicone band which accents the silver watch face nicely. Leather tends to be the preferred band material for many. Since this is a surf watch that is intended to get wet, a leather band would not be ideal. Many watches intended for water sports use polyurethane to make their watch bands, mostly because it is cheaper than silicone. Silicone is superior to polyurethane due to its increased color retention and comfort level. This was a great choice by Rip Curl, because when wearing a watch for long periods of time, they can become very uncomfortable very quickly. Especially when wet.

In overall appearance, the Rip Curl Pipeline looks better than other competitive models, some of which have been compared to toys from of one of those coin operated machines that you might see at the mall or when leaving the grocery store. It appears as a good dive watch should: Rugged, durable, solid, but yet still stylish, and attractive to the eye. The band comes in a myriad of colors for you to choose from such as Black, Red, Blue, White, or Yellow.  So there is quite a variety of different looks from which you can select your favorite. The watch is definitely up to par with the other fantastic watches in the Rip Curl Tidemaster line.

Rip Curl Pipeline

The watch is certainly not lacking in the technology department either. It is loaded with all of the innovative and great features that you might expect from some of the more expensive models in Rip Curl’s arsenal. The casing material, as most of the other watches in the Tidemaster series by Rip Curl, is 316L Stainless Steel. This is the best type of steel available for making a watch water-resistant as well as corrosion resistant. It of course comes loaded with all of the technological features of the other Tidemaster watches, like Rip Curl’s patented ATS or Automatic Tide System. The ATS allows the watch to be programmed for thousands of beaches worldwide, and provides an accurate tide chart right on your wrist to ensure that you can be surfing at the best possible times. It also has pre-programmed sunrise and sunset times, moon phases, a digital compass, stopwatch, dual time setting, a light, alarm, and countdown timer to round it all out. That’s more tools than a Swiss Army knife. As most other diving/surfing watches by Rip Curl, it is depth tested to 200 meters (656 feet) which is quite deep. So divers rejoice! This watch would be a good choice for you due to its incredible water resistance.

At around $250.00 USD, this watch is an exceptional buy, especially considering the amount of features that come loaded onto it. It has most of the features that would be found on some of the $600.00 USD Tidemasters from Rip Curl.

If you are in need of a dive watch that comes loaded with many great features and has good aesthetic appeal, you need not look any further than the Rip Curl Pipeline.

Stay tuned for more great watch reviews from the crew here at GreatTiming.

A Little Post-Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday Talk

November 26, 2012 Leave a comment

After the long weekend and much turkey eating and stuffing our faces, it is time for things to go back to normal (at least until Christmas gets a little closer) and for people to start getting back to work. I’m not really too sure about the rest of the country, but up here in Ohio we had an absolutely gorgeous day for thanksgiving. It reminded me of an end of summer day rather than the day of thanksgiving. It had to be about 60 degrees that day. And then the next day was more like November in Ohio because it was absolutely freezing. It was strange, almost surreal, that it was so nice the day of thanksgiving and then as if it hadn’t even happened, we got snow (albeit a very little amount) the very next day. We had an excellent holiday here at the GreatTiming blog, and here’s hoping that you all did as well.

As all of you know, Black Friday is the day after thanksgiving, when shoppers wait in seemingly endless lines at ungodly hours of the early morning so that they can rush stores and re-enact scenes from the LA riots in all of their favorite shopping malls and retail stores across the nation for great deals on everything from plasma screens and electronic devices to this years hot new children’s toys. All for their friends and families. And these people are not messing around. I heard from a few people who braved the Black Friday masses that some shoppers were getting borderline violent over some products and in certain stores. I was told that a local Victoria’s Secret seemed more like an MMA cage fight rather than a retail store. Garments were being thrown, tables over turned, people smashed around. But that is the extent that people will go to for the people that they love. It’s really worth it though considering some of the great deals that some people have gotten on products that could be quite expensive. But is all of the black Friday craze soon to be a thing of the past?

A new shopping trend is taking root, infact it’s going right now as I am typing this, and you can do it from the safety and security of your home right from your couch and your laptop. Forget the lines and the irate shoppers, and leave the football pads at home. Cyber Monday is becoming the new way to get great deals for everybody on your Christmas list this year. Over the past few years online shopping has certainly gained in popularity, to say the least, and now, there is one day where seemingly everyone is offering great deals for those who prefer online shopping. Everything from jewelry, clothing, home accessories, and electronics are being discounted by as much as 65 percent on select products from places such as Amazon right now all across the internet. Some places will have  deals that last all week and wont simply be here for one day. It is expected that so many people will be cashing in on these great deals that companies have had to block many retail websites from being accessed while employees are at work. Could this be the new craze? It certainly seems like it could be that way. I know I would rather get great deals at home on my laptop in my pajamas with a beer in my hand rather than fighting through the horde of orcs at the shopping mall.

Head on over to our website to take advantage of the great deals and get 10% off any purchase when you enter the special code at checkout!
Happy holidays.
